Mengapa Kita Butuh Mimpi Dalam Tidur?

Orang mengatakan waktu dapat menyembuhkan semua luka. Itu ternyata ada benarnya. Riset terbaru dari University of California, Berkeley, mengindikasikan bahwa lamanya waktu bermimpi ketika tidur dapat mengatasi penderitaan yang menyakitkan.

Peneliti UC Berkeley menemukan bahwa, selama fase mimpi dalam tidur, atau tidur rapid eye movement (REM), yaitu ketika bola mata bergerak cepat saat tidur, zat kimia stres dipadamkan dan otak memproses pengalaman emosional dan mengikis memori yang menyakitkan.

Temuan ini menawarkan sebuah penjelasan yang menarik soal mengapa orang yang menderita kelainan stres pasca-kejadian traumatis, seperti veteran perang, menemui kesulitan untuk pulih dari pengalaman yang membuatnya tertekan dan berulang kali dihantui mimpi buruk. Penelitian ini juga menawarkan jawaban mengapa kita bermimpi.

"Tahap mimpi tidur, berdasarkan komposisi neurokimianya yang unik, memberikan semacam terapi sepanjang malam, sejenis balsam menenangkan yang membuang semua hal yang tajam dari pengalaman emosional pada hari sebelumnya," kata Matthew Walker, dosen psikologi dan neuroscience di universitas itu yang terlibat dalam studi yang dipublikasikan dalam jurnal Current Biology.

Bagi penderita stres pasca-peristiwa traumatis, terapi malam ini mungkin tidak bekerja secara efektif. "Sehingga ketika kilas balik, misalnya dipicu oleh ban mobil meletus, mereka mengalami kembali seluruh pengalaman mengerikan itu karena emosinya tidak disingkirkan dari memori dengan benar selama tidur," kata Walker.

Hasil studi ini menawarkan berbagai informasi tentang fungsi emosional tidur REM, yang biasanya mencakup 20 persen dari waktu tidur seorang manusia sehat.

Studi otak sebelumnya mengindikasikan bahwa pola tidur sehat itu tidak berjalan sebagaimana mestinya pada orang yang menderita kelainan seperti trauma dan depresi.
